How to Build a BBQ Smoker
This smoker allows you to smoke BBQ Ribs, Beef Briskets,Pork Butts, Turkey's, Chicken or Fish for that down home flavor.
I wanted a smoker that was big enough to handle a group of people and yet was small enough to handle the occasional cookout for 1 or 2 people without too much hassle. It had to be able to handle recipes for smoked ribs or smoked turkeys as well as the longer cook times of BBQ Briskets or smoked pork shoulders.
A quick search on the Internet showed 100's of choices, but they all ran $300 and up! I figured I could build one for a whole lots less. Replacement parts cost only fraction of the cost.
You'll need a barrel, grille grates, hotplate, and a smoker that uses pellets to produce smoke. Assembly tools are a hand drill, cutoff wheel, various bits, and nuts amp; bolts. Total cost of everything brand new was less than $100 - the average homeowner will only need to purchase the smoker, pellets and possibly a hotplate.
1. Take the smoke unit apart, you will need to use the bracket for a template. Position the bracket so that the smoke hole is about 4-5 inches from the bottom of barrel and secure it with a self-tapping screw. Then drill the smoke hole through the side of the barrel and secure the smoker to the barrel.
Drill a hole large enough so the hotplate cord will fit and thread the cord thorough.
2. Now drill 8 holes equidistant apart around the circumference of the barrel - they should be about 3 inches above the smoke hole, and insert 2 inch bolts amp; nuts to act as grill grate supports.
Repeat the process depending on how many grates your planning on using ....there should be a minimum of 8-10 inches between them if your planning on smoking turkeys.
3. Use the cutoff wheel to trim the grates to fit .....tighten all the fittings and you're done.
