How to Refinish Wood Cutting Boards
If your wooden cutting board or butcher's block has seen better days, you can use the steps outlined in this article to make it look like new again!
Step 1 - Resurfacing: The first step to restoring your cutting board is to sand down the surface using a very fine grit sandpaper to remove light knife knicks and other surface blemishes. If your cutting board has deeper scratches or dings, use a rougher grit sandpaper to remove most of them, then switch to a fine grit sandpaper for the final bit of sanding. This will ensure that you are left with a smooth surface free of blemishes and imperfections.
Step 2 - Cleaning: Depending on how much sanding you did in step 1, you may want to stop and clean up all of the wood dust that yothe minerau made. Use a cotton hand towel or microfiber cloth to 'pull' the wood dust out of the grain of your cutting board, and go back over it again to make sure you removed as much of the wood dust as possible. This will ensure that the next step goes as smoothly as possible.
Step 3 - Re-Sealing: You will seal your cutting board with mineral oil. This is a great finishing option for cutting boards and butcher's blocks because it's totally safe to eat, which means it won't contaminate your food. To use the mineral oil, pour a small amount on a soft cloth, and rub the cloth across your cutting board in a circular motion. Make sure to overlap your strokes so that you get an even coating all the way around your cutting board. Repeat this two or three times on the first day, then repeat this once a week for the first couple of months. After that, you only need to re-apply the mineral oil once a month or so to keep your cutting board looking brand new!
