Man's Leg Found in a BBQ Smoker in North Carolina
If you want to keep things of sentimental value, you should keep them in a safe place, not a barbeque smoker.
The smoker (and leg) were won by a North Carolina man, Shannon Whisnant. When he found the appendage, Whisnant decided he was going to build a museum and charge people $10 to see the leg. At least that's what he told Judge Greg Mathis, yes, the same one from TV. The two men brought the case to a television court room, and guess who won...the crazy guy that wants to turn this poor amputee's loss into a money-making machine. No, he didn't get to keep the leg. Judge Mathis ultimately dismissed John Wood's claim for emotional distress caused by the media frenzy, and then ordered him to pay Shannon Whisnant $5000. How's that for a shot in the foot?
So kids, the moral of the story is to keep your important things in a safe place, and not in a barbeque smoker. Poor Mr. Wood only wanted to be buried as a "whole" man when he dies, which is why he fought so persistently (yeah...right...on the Judge Mathis Show) for his leg. On the flip side, at least Mr. Whisnant gets $5000 - it's probably more than he would've made charging people to see the body part.
For what it's worth, here is my two cents. First, I understand why Mr. Wood would want to keep his leg, but putting it in a smoker? That just seems neglectful to me. He should've taken better care of it. Second, how did Mr. Whisnant come to the conclusion that people would pay to visit his "museum" to see Wood's leg? Maybe if it was James Woods' amputated leg, or someone else with some celebrity, but who really wants to see the leg of some guy from South Carolina? This place is becoming stranger and stranger by the minute. Could you imagine John Adams getting ahold of George Washington's wooden teeth and trying to profit off them? "Yes good sir, give me two chickens and a bale of hay and I'll let you touch Washington's teeth." I don't know, maybe they did.
