Memorial Day Recipes that Are Delicious and Easy to Make

Here are recipes for bbq beans, cucumber salad, potatoe salad, and a bonus secret recipe that you need to read the article to find. These delicious memorial day recipes are sure to be a hit at your BBQ.

Memorial day is a day that is widely celebrated in the United States. A lot of people think of it as the start of the summer and out door activities. They also think of it as a day off of work.

It is a time to get together with friends and family. A time to party, camp, and BBQ. However a lot of people forget what Memorial Day truly is. Memorial Day is a Day to remember are veterans that fought and died to give us are freedoms that so many people take for granted.

So this Memorial Day please don't forget about the brave men and woman that gave there lives for all of us to be enjoying the activities that we will be doing.

As with most holidays that we have in the United States (especially the summer Holidays) we Americans tend to have BBQ's. What is a BBQ without some great food.

Most of the BBQ's I go to around this time of year are of three types. The First is where everyone brings there own main dish to grill and a side dish to pass. The second is where the host supplies the main dish and then has the guest bring a side dish to pass. The third is where the host supplies everything.

With the Memorial Day recipes I am going to give you today it wont matter what type of BBQ you are having or going to you will be ready. These easy Memorial Day recipes will sure to be a hit.

BBQ BAKED BEANS

You will need a large crock pot for this recipe. Preferably one that has low, high, and warm settings.

Not what BBQ is complete with out some good old fashioned baked beans. This Recipe Takes a good two Days to make. Yet it is still simple. Most of the time is just the beans cooking in the crock pot.

12 cups water

1 tbsp chopped fresh garlic

1 pound bag dried pinto beans

1 pound bag dried kidney beans

1 tbsp hot sauce

In a large kettle add half the water, the beans, the garlic, and the hot sauce. If you have a large enough kettle you can add all the water.

Bring the water to a slow boil and boil these beans for a good two hours. As the beans are slowly boiling they will absorb water and also some will be lost with evaporation. Make sure to keep adding water till the two hours or so is up.

This step is to start to soften and reconstitute the beans. After the two hour drain the beans in a colander. DO NOT rinse we don't want to lose the flavors of the hot sauce and garlic.

2 pounds of hamburger fried and drained of fat

1 pound of bacon cut into ½ inch pieces fried crisp and drained of fat

2 tbsp Italian seasoning

1 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp molasses

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

½ cup white vinegar

¼ cup lemon juice

4 cups ketchup (store brand or generic works great)

2/3 cup yellow mustard

1-2 tbsp crushed red pepper flakes (depending on how spicy you like it)

2 cups water

With all these ingredients in the crock pot mix and set crock pot to low heat.

1 green pepper

1 sweet red pepper

2 medium onions

4 stalks celery

Dice all of these ingredients into about ¼ inch pieces.

1 stick ¼ pound of butter

In a large frying pan melt butter and add above vegetables. Fry these ingredients till the onions are transparent and just starting to brown or caramelize. Pour content of pan into crock pot (including butter). Mix again.

Set the crock pot on low. Occasionally when you go to where you have the crock pot stir. If you go to bed or have to run out you can set the crock pot to warm. The purpose of letting the beans cook for over night is to let the beans get even more tender.

Bonus Recipe

From the recipe above I'm going to tell you a secret. If you take all the ingredients minus the beans, bacon, hamburger, molasses, and put it in the crock pot with a 3-5 pound cheap pork shoulder roast and let it cook for the two days. Pull out the pork and shred meat taking out the bone you end up with a excellent pulled pork for sandwiches.

Pickled Cucumber Salad

1 medium onion

2 cucumbers

1 cup water

1 cup vinegar

1cup sugar

1 tsp minced garlic

Peel and cut onion and cucumber into ¼ inch thick coins. Pop the onion layers out of each other. Place in mixing bowl.

In separate mixing bowl add remaining ingredients and mix until all sugar dissolves. Pour over onion and cucumbers cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.

If you need more of the liquid to cover cucumber onion mix just make up more. You want enough liquid to completely cover cucumbers and onions. If you have more liquid it will not hurt the recipe.

As with most memorial day recipes there may not be enough for all the guest you have coming just double or triple the recipe.

Potato Salad

Now what list of Memorial Day recipes would be complete without potato salad. When we talk about potato salad we have two main types. We have the warm German potato salad, and then the creamy American style. Since we have are crock pot full of those delicious beans we are going to do the American style.

Depending on the amount of people you are making this Memorial day recipe for you may want to just start out by doubling this recipe.

2 ½ pound potato's you can use red potatoes which are firmer

½ pound of bacon cut into ¼ slices and fried crisp (save the bacon grease)

3 large green onions

2 stalks celery

1 medium onion

½ tsp garlic salt

½ tsp garlic powder

2 tbsp sugar

2 tbsp vinegar

2 tbsp lemon juice

2 hard boiled eggs

½ cup Mexican style finely shredded cheese

1 cup mayo or salad dressing

2 tbsp yellow mustard

Peel and cut the potato's into ½ inch pieces. Boil till tender. While potato's are boiling fry your bacon.

When bacon is crisp place on paper towel to cool. When potato's are tender drain in colander and rinse. Let both cool.

Cut onion and celery into ¼ inch pieces add to frying pan with bacon grease. Add in garlic salt, and garlic powder. Fry until the onions are translucent and just starting to caramelize. Once done frying add ingredients from frying pan into large mixing bowl and let cool.

Cut egg into ½ inch pieces.

When all ingredients are cool add all into mixing bowl and mix well. Even though you are mixing well you want to be gentle so as not to make mashed potato salad. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.
