Wiley's Championship BBQ: Savannah's Best BBQ
After a recent visit to Savannah, I stumbled upon this little gem. And it sure was DE-licious.
It's been five years since I left Texas and returned to my Yankee roots in Pennsylvania. And it's been five years since I've come close to BBQ heaven--that is until last month. And no, Smokey Bones just doesn't cut it for me. No self-respecting BBQ aficionado thinks that Smokey Bones has great BBQ. Sorry, Smokey Bones fans.
Anyway, I miss those hallowed days of chopped beef sammies, BBQ sausage, and all of the belly-busting trimmings at the places I frequented in Texas--those small joints and BBQ chain restaurants that offered yummy, meaty treats with an ice-cold Shiner Bock. If there's anything besides the Tex-Mex that I miss the most from my years in God's country, it is the BBQ.
Of course, we're not just talkin' Texas BBQ that I miss. I refer to just about any kind of BBQ that was smoked to perfection on Southern soil. Sorry, my fellow Yankees......we just don't have what it takes to make a good brisket. And that's a fact, Jack. Sure, there's the occasional, delicious pulled-pork sandwiches that appear on New Year's Eve and Super Bowl Sundays--and they can be very tasty (my sister makes a great pulled pork in the Crock Pot)......but with BBQ--well, this is one war that the South did win. And, after all, there's just something not right about getting one's only BBQ fix from a Crock Pot.
Georgia to the Rescue
Thanks to a recent vacation to the Savannah area, however, my taste buds once again had the honor--the sheer incendiary pleasure---of encountering God's little gift to humankind: good BBQ.
Maybe it was the moss-draped oak trees.....maybe it was the morbid beauty of the Mercer house........or the cobblestone streets by the river......maybe it was the experience of the unlikely beauty of the city's cemeteries. Heck, maybe it was the salt-tinged air that reminded me of trips to my grandparents in Galveston, TX, and delicious slices of beef at the small BBQ joint down the street--all of these things triggered an animalistic need to shove my face with BBQ--and I was in the South--and I knew I would find it.....somehow, someway. Luckily, the BBQ I had in Savannah, GA, was the best damn BBQ I ever had.
Wiley's Championship BBQ
This BBQ wasn't in some kind of pirate-themed restaurant (which was really cool and unique, by the way). And it wasn't in some kind of haunted restaurant (the food was not that great there--and no, Zac Bagans, I didn't encounter any demonic entities in the basement of Moon River).........And t here was no fancy tourist-trappy, alligator-feeding mumbo-jumbo outside, either (a la the Crab Shack on Tybee Island).
No, Wiley's Championship BBQ--the site of BBQ nirvana--was somewhere between Tybee Island and Savannah. It definitely seemed like a local hangout. Basically, Wiley's was in the least assuming of places--a small plaza--and if my sister hadn't looked it up, we probably would have passed it right up and went to Paula Deen's place (which I hear is a little overrated, too), instead.
When we arrived, our party of eight sat right down, as it was fairly early. The restaurant was very cozy--and by cozy--I mean very small. It was very clean with simple, modern decor. The wall's were adorned with Wiley's awards--which I guess allows it to live up to its name of championship BBQ. Ultimately, decorations were basic with few frills. But that didn't matter because once I got my food, I didn't even notice that the restaurant lacked visual gimmicks on its walls; the food was the art.
Food with a Southern Touch
Now, I can't recall the name of our waiter and I can't recall the waitress who chatted up my family while we waited for our food. But they really knew the meaning of Southern hospitality. They provided great suggestions, and....taking a gamble--I tried the waiter's suggestion of the brisket meal. I was not disappointed. In Texas, brisket is King. Anywhere else--brisket is......well, "eh." When I finished devouring my food, I even tried some of my mother's pulled pork and it literally melted in my mouth. Paired with the pecan beer, suggested by the waitress, everything was delicious.
To literally top it off, the deserts were homemade. And one piece of pie was definitely enough for two. I had gorged on so much meat, that I could only finish half of my dessert. In the end, I'm pretty certain that I was in a self-induced food coma by the time I waddled out the door. And it was great.
Overall, the meal at Wiley's BBQ was--without a doubt--the best meal I had in the Savannah area that entire week. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great food and excellent service.
So if you're ever in Savannah and want quality BBQ at an unassuming place, check out Wylie's. Take a look at the restaurant's site before you go, but trust me--everything is great at Wylie's Championship BBQ.
From my observation it seems that Wiley's does much of its business via catering and takeout. By the time we were ready to leave, though, there was a wait for a tables. So, when you go, get there pretty early.
