Product Description
Banquet has been in the business of making frozen foods for more than half a century. Since I trust the Banquet brand name, how could their Hot amp; Spicy Wings be anything but good?
First, let me tell you that a fourteen-ounce box of this product costs $3.99. You get about a dozen pieces of breaded chicken.
Ingredients
The basic ingredients of Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings are Chicken Wing Sections, Water, Breader-(Wheat Flour, Chicken Flavor, Chicken Skin, Chicken Broth, Salt, Flavor, Cornstarch, Soybean Oil, Gum Arabic, Spice Extractives)- Salt, Beet Powder, Paprika, Batter, Soy Lecithin, Vegetable Oil. This product contains wheat and soy.
Nutrition Facts
The box says there are about four- three-ounce servings in a box of Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings. I counted twelve pieces, meaning each piece is considered to be about an ounce. Three pieces, or one serving, couldn't fill the stomach of a small child, much less a hungry adult. Still, a serving contains 260 calories, 150 of which are from fat. There are 17 grams of fat, 4.5 grams of Saturated Fat, 0.5 grams of Trans Fat, 55 milligrams of Cholesterol, 320 milligrams of Sodium, 8 Total Carbohydrates, 5 grams of Dietary Fibers, 0 Sugars and 19 grams of Protein.
Easy Preparation
You can heat up Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings in your microwave or in your oven. It takes five minutes on "High" to heat an entire box in your microwave, or about twenty minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit in your oven.
Taste Test
I chose to use the oven method to heat up half a box, or six, of the Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings. Sometimes, heating up foods in the microwave don't produce good results. And, it was a chilly day outside anyhow, so I welcomed the warming heat in my kitchen.
In eighteen minutes, the chicken was ready to eat. I couldn't help but notice the streams of grease that ran across the cookie sheet as I removed it from the oven. The chicken crackled and popped, and I had to wait a few minutes until it cooled down. In the meantime, I propped one end of the sheet up so the grease would continue to run away from the Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings. Before I placed the pieces on a paper plate, I also put a paper towel down first to help absorb the grease.
Overall, for chicken wings, the taste was pretty good. The outside breading was crunchy and flavorful, while the inside was moist and tender. I've seen two flavors of these Banquet chicken wings- Honey BBQ and the Hot and Spicy. These were a bit spicy, but I wouldn't describe them as being very "hot." In fact, these are pretty tame in the "Light Up My Mouth" category.
Conclusion
The price comes out to $4.56 a pound, or about 33 cents for each one-ounce Banquet chicken wing in a box. For that price, you could make your own breaded wings at home for much cheaper. Even though this product is pretty tasty, the amount of grease and fat it contains is also alarming. And, as I previously noted, a hungry adult can easily eat an entire box of Banquet Hot amp; Spicy Wings.
If you love to eat chicken, and you're looking for a quick and easy product to eat every once in awhile as a treat, then these wings may be a good choice for you. However, if you're on a budget, skip these pricey little wings and make your own instead.
