The grocer's frozen pizza section keeps growing, but the California Pizza Kitchen microwavable pizzas stand out as an alternative to boring frozen pizzas.
Taste
The CPK microwavable pizzas have gourmet flair. The bbq chicken pizza has a sweet, smoky bbq sauce, chicken, reduced fat mozzarella cheese, smoked gouda cheese, red onions and cilantro. Like the picture on the box, my pizza had a nice distribution of chicken and onions.
The traditional pizza crust is thick and tasted homemade. Although the pizza had a modest layer of toppings, it was quite flavorful. Each ingredient complemented the others to create a complex, delicious flavor. The smoked gouda added a little creaminess to the mozzarella cheese.
The only weakness was the texture of the red onions. They were a little too soft and a bit waterlogged -- probably due to being frozen. Perhaps oven baking prevents this problem, but I was looking for something microwavable.

According to the nutrition label, this pizza contains two servings. Based on the caloric and nutrition content, I agree with the serving size, but it was not substantial enough for a meal. (CPK must agree because they also offer this size pizza in a box labeled pizza for one.) I added a large salad to transform a single serving into a tasty, convenient meal at a decent price.
Value
The microwavable California Pizza Kitchen pizzas were marked as a rollback product at Walmart. The 7.5-ounce frozen pizza cost two dollars. Comparable products cost as much as four dollars, making these a good value for convenience food.
Convenience Quotient
Cooking frozen pizza usually involves preheating the oven, but this pizza baked quite nicely in the microwave. The pizza comes with a microwave crisping tray that is ready to use without any folding necessary. I had to cook it a minute longer than the directions indicated. In less than six minutes, I had a well-cooked pizza with a lightly crisp crust.
