Fourth of July BBQ Recipes
It is that time again. The time we pull out the bbq grills and start grilling!!
My all time favorite grilling recipe is stuffed hot dogs. I am not a big fan of regular hot dogs as I do not eat beef and I do not like to eat nitrates and artificial additives and preservatives so I use hot dogs from the health food store. They are nitrate/nitrite free and have no preservatives. They are all natural. You can get either chicken, turkey or beef. You can use whatever hot dogs you wish though with this recipe. Take the hot dog and slice right down the middle from the top all the way down to the bottom. Do not cut through the hot dog though. Stuff with things such as cheese, jalapenos, bacon bits or even breadcrumbs. I like to stuff with cheese and bacon bits. Grill until done. If you need to, you can tie them shut or hold shut with toothpicks. Just watch that they are not directly in the fire. The kids love this recipe because most kids love hot dogs and cheese. It is easy to prepare and easy to make and certainly easy to eat. For my youngest child who is under two, I make these stuffed hot dogs and cut in small pieces for him. He loves them!!
Another great recipe is homemade turkey burger stuffed with cheese and mushrooms. You can use beef burgers as well. You just take a pound of ground beef or turkey and place in a bowl. Add in some breadcrumbs, an egg, grated cheese and chopped mushrooms. Mix together well. Form into hamburgers. Cook on grill as usual. These taste so good and are less messy than a regular cheeseburger with mushrooms since everything is built right into the burger itself. I toast the hamburger buns and add a little bit of mustard. The kids love this one as well. This is another very easy recipe to prepare as well as make. It doesn't take any big amount of time at all.
We also love to have grilled corn on the cob. We leave the corn in the husks and grill that way. They taste so juicy and do not take long at all. It actually takes less time this way than if you were to cook them in boiling water on the stove. I also try to have some vegetables prepared so that it is more of a balanced meal. That isn't always the case during BBQ's. You usually eat carbs and meat and nothing else. I love grilled whole mushrooms. You can just put them on the grill as is or you can skewer them for a nicer presentation. You can also add onions and peppers to the skewers as well for a little added flavor. Don't forget to brush a little bit of butter on them. So tasty!!
Another easy and quick recipe is stuffed mushrooms. These have very little preparation and the cooking time is only about 15-20 minutes. Take fresh whole mushrooms and cut out the insides. In a bowl, mix together breadcrumbs and olive oil. Just enough olive oil to cover the breadcrumbs, so not too much. Mix well and scoop into the mushrooms. Place on a baking sheet or piece of foil and bake for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees. They are a very good appetizer while waiting for the other food to be done and ready to eat. It is a good way to slip in a vegetable for your picky eater.
Now dessert is a must after a great menu of BBQ items. Dessert can be made on the grill as well. Everyone loves s'mores. I haven't met one person yet that doesn't enjoy a good grilled s'more. It is a huge hit with the kids. Just take either graham crackers or your favorite type of cookies, such as chocolate chip cookies and place on a skewer. Then add a thin piece of chocolate. I love dark chocolate or coffee flavored but you can use any type of chocolate that you love. Then add a marshmallow. After the marshmallow, you can add another cookie or graham cracker. Grill to desired temperature. Only takes a few minutes and they taste so great. You can alter any way you like. If you do not like chocolate or cookies you can add a different food or you can just toast marshmallows.
All of my recipes and ideas can be altered to suit your tastes and needs. These are just my favorites. Maybe they will give you ideas to alter it to make your very own recipes. I am the queen of easy and fast so all of these things are just that, easy and fast. I am not a gourmet cook, as if you couldn't tell. I just love great tasting foods that are healthy for you.
