DIY How to Poor and Finish a Cement Pad
Save money on pouring and finishing a concrete slab for a dog house, shed, building or just a pad for BBQ grilling on by doing it yourself. All it takes is about a days worth of work and a couple of people familiar with masonry or construction.
Here are some basic instructions on how to pour and finish a concrete slab. First of all I'd like to let you know that it's not very complicated. You're just going to need a couple of friends or family members to help you. The only things you may need to rent are a bull float, a power trowel, and a little hand-held trowel for the edges.
Step 1. Make sure your area is level. This may require some digging or using extra gravel or sand.
Step 2. Once you have an area measured and squared off, mark it with steaks and smooth over a layer of sand or gravel an inch or two thick. This will provide the base of the slab and will help to prevent it from shifting and cracking. Make sure you leave about a four to eight inch space inside the forms bare all around the sand. Your slab will actually be coming into contact with the earth on the edges and corners.
Step 3. Set up some kind of reinforcement to make the concrete stronger when it dries. You can use re-bar to do this. Just place a pole about every 2 feet inside the area going up and down and side to side. Raise them up off the ground a couple of inches by driving little re-bar steaks into the ground and tie the re-bar rods to the steaks with wire.
Step 4.Set up the forms. Decide on how deep you want the slab to be and set up some forms on the edges and make sure they are secure enough to hold in the wet cement as it's being poured. You can use straight boards or metal forms for this. Steaks behind the forms will help to strengthen them. When you set the top of the forms level with where you want the top of the slab this will enable you to just lay your striker on top of the forms and scrape off or even out wet concrete once it's poured.
Step 5. Striking the poured concrete. Take a long, straight board or a metal bar with square corners a couple of feet longer than the distance of the forms from side to side and lay it on top of the forms at your beginning end of the pad, or the front. As the concrete is being poured, use hoes and shovels to move it around to the edges and corners to get it as level as possible, working from one end to the other. Put one person on one side of the striker and another at the other side. Press down firmly and push/pull the striker back and forth while slowly pushing forward toward the back of the slab. You may need to go back over areas and fill them in with more concrete.
Step 6. Run the bull float over the pad to draw out the moisture. Just lay it at one end and push it down to the back end and then pull it back. Step to the side and continue until you finish floating the whole pad. Do this a couple of times and let the pad sit for up to 2 or 3 hours, depending on the weather. Try to float out any lines or blemishes. Wait until it is dry enough to walk on after most of the moisture is drawn out. Depending on what you're pouring the pad for, you may be able to stop here.
Step 7. Go over the pad a few times with a power trowel until smooth. Make sure there is a small gap between the concrete and the forms to prevent the edges from cracking off when you're finished. You can do this with a smaller hand trowel. Once the pad is dried at least over night, remove the forms and there you go!
