How to Prepare Your BBQ Grill for the Summer
How to clean and prepare your grill this year, and hat to do to store it for the next year.
If you have a good ol' charcoal barbecue then cleaning will be quick, and fairly painless. Pull it out and place it atop a drop cloth or garbage bags. Remove the grill and dump out any remaining ash from the barbeque then wipe out the inside. Scrub the grill with oven cleaner, a baking soda and water paste or soap and water. Next inspect the outside of the barbecue to make sure legs and wheels are still in good condition and no screws are lose or that the welded spots have not broken. Make sure legs have not been bent or damaged in any way. Next wipe down the outside and lid with soap and water and replace the grill. Please note here that the inside of the lid may require a bit more scrubbing.
A gas barbeque is requires a bit more cleaning time. Older models will follow the basic cleaning pattern of the charcoal barbecue with the addition of checking the gas connections and elements but many newer models today have the additions of things like drip trays, hoods, rock trays and plates.
First you will need to remove and clean all the separate parts. These will include the hood, plates, drip tray, rocks and tray as well as the grills. Over cleaner works great on many of these items. Simply spray on, place the items in a trash bag and leave out in the sun while you clean the rest of the items. Be careful though, some items are only coated with a material, not completely made from it. If this is the case oven cleaner will remove the finish. You can also try scrubbing these pieces with a baking soda and paste mixture. Use a wire brush on items like the grill to get down in between the cracks and crevasses. While you are cleaning these parts, be sure to wipe down and scrub the inside of the barbecue.
Next you will need to check all your connections for the gas. Start by spraying down the valves with WD-40. Remove them by wiggling them back and forth. Once you have them out wipe down both parts with a cloth then re-oil with light match oil and coat the valves with Vaseline. If you removed them and discovered damage then go ahead and replace. Next check the gas bottle for leaks and cracks. You may need to wipe this down if it is coated in dirt and grease. You will also need to check the connections. Make sure the line is connected and then open the valve. Wipe some soapy water all around the connections. If you see bubbles then go ahead and tighten the connection. Wipe down with plain water.
Now that you have that done, wipe down the outside of the barbecue. Be sure scrub away and grease or burnt chunks that may have dripped along the outside. Also go ahead and give your barbecue a good shine by using a product appropriate to the finish. Reassemble all your parts and check the stand, legs, wheels, etc. Make sure all screws are tightened down and that nothing is bent, cracked or broken. If so then replace or repair.
Now that your barbecue is ready be sure clean after each use throughout the summer and store it in a safe place. Take the time to give it a good cleaning before you put it way for the winter. That way when you pull it out next year you will only need to wipe it down and perform a quick safety check. Above all have fun this summer and hey, put a burger on for me!
