What Do Mylie Cyrus and Paula Abdul Have in Common?

The American celebrity machine grinds its females into hamburger, ready for grilling.

In the past couple of days, however, these two opposites have come face to face with the very same celebrity transgression: they made fools of themselves. Or, more accurately, they made typical, human-being type mistakes. The media has done the rest. Here's a recap of the aforesaid 'mistakes' (for those of you who have been somehow or another off the grid for the past couple of days.)

Mylie Cyrus posed for photographer Annie Leibowitz at a shoot for Vanity Fair and some say the pictures are a little too sexualized for Hannah Montana fans. Mylie and company are now having fits of regret. Paula's transgression happened during a live broadcast of American Idol when she, in her now infamous one-more-for-the-road way of speaking, began critiquing the performance of a song that hadn't even been sung yet. The entire press reaction to both of these occurrences should have been "oops." Instead, the debate about appropriate behaviour for women of all ages must rage.. again.

Why is it that a photograph of a young woman with a bare back, taken by a world-renowned female photographer while guardians watched and approved can get so much press coverage? Why is it that screwing up your notes after a short-notice procedural change to a live television show ends up as a headline-making controversy? Because... silly rabbits... that's entertainment! Brittany stopped behaving badly. Paris is likely laying low. Anna Nicole ain't no more. Lindsey's not doing much. I could go on. But what of that guy from CSI? Where's his face all over the tabloids? If all celebrity missteps were treated equally, why don't I know his name? And how is it that Robert Downey Jr. - bad boy extraordinaire - is out of prison, making blockbuster movies, and NOT being followed relentlessly until someone snaps a shot of him tripping down a staircase thereby proving that he must be at it again?? Could it be that in the world of today, women are more interesting 'bad guys?'

If men and women are to be treated as equals, then I believe men should stand up and fight for their right to negative press coverage. Men in the media should go out of their way to promote the scandals involving their brothers. They should insist on their opportunity to be photographed by zoom lens, bloated and pale on the deck of a boat or trying on clothing that doesn't fit well. Perhaps they could use Roger Clemens as a test case - he's been in the news a little lately - they could hound him everywhere he goes and count how long it takes before he develops an eating disorder (Like Princess Diana)or becomes mentally unstable (Like Brittany) or violent (like Iman) or suicidal (like Marilyn Munroe). But I am anticipating that instead of doing any such things to Mr. Clemens, the press will go to town digging up any naked or half-naked pictures they can find of Clemens' alleged mistresses. They'll certainly spotlight his wife, whether the coverage will be overly negative or overly positive remains to be seen.

The NY Times piece, Boys Will Be Boys, Girls Will be Hounded By the Media in February this year, names even more names. According to the story, publishers and other media types blame the demographics, not sexism, for the disparity in coverage between male and female celebrities. They claim their readership is largely made up of women and therefore their stories reflect what women want. Are they correct in their assumptions about what women want? If so, are women prepared to retrain their daughters to survive in a world with such blatant double standards? Are we to tell our teen aged girls that Mylie Cyrus is 'bad' now because we've seen her bare between the shoulder blades, or that Paula Abdul is to be mocked because she couldn't read the scribbling she had done in the dark? Most importantly, are we prepared to push our own flesh and blood through the meat grinder if she ever makes a similar misstep, all the while teaching her brother that it's okay to hurt people, cheat on his spouse, go to prison, take drugs or punch strangers because "he's a boy?"

Mylie and Paula have this in common: they aren't perfect. End of story. Ahhh.. but you can't sell any newspapers with that.
