Health Valley Fat Free Minestrone Soup
This soup is 70% organic and consists of tomatoes, beans, vegetables and pasta shells.
There has been a stomach flu going around, and I was feeling a little under the weather this afternoon, so I decided to heat up a can of Health Valley Fat Free Minestrone Soup for dinner.
Health Valley Fat Free Minestrone Soup is not concentrated, but rather is ready to serve right from the can. It contains 15 ounces of soup, which will serve two people, and is fat free and 70% organic. It also contains 50% less sodium than other leading soups, and is made with no genetically engineered ingredients.
The label reads "New Look! Great Taste!", and shows a bowl of the soup which looks like it contains pasta shells, celery, and green beans in a tomato base. I love minestrone soup, and this looked very appealing.
To fix, you simply open the can with a can opener, and heat it up in a small sauce pan, no need to add water. The label claims that Health Valley Fat Free Minestrone Soup has a "full bodied flavor" and a "mouth watering aroma" without the fat. It goes on to say that this soup provides a good source of fiber, vitamin A, protein and iron.
Since I am on a diet, the fat free claim was very appealing to me. One cup contains only 110 calories and 0 grams of fat. There are zero grams of cholesterol, 390 milligrams of sodium, 23 grams of carbohydrates, 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of sugars, and 8 grams of protein. There are two servings per 15 ounce can.
Now, I do love legumes, and have made homemade bean soups many times, but this Health Valley Fat Free Minestrone Soup contained way too many beans for my liking. There were pinto beans, great northern beans, small white beans, garbanzo beans, and red kidney beans. The base of the soup was tasty, but I admit that I needed to add a bit more salt to the soup to really enjoy it.
I liked the flavor of this soup, but was disapppointed that it contained so many beans and not enough other vegetables. The ingredients list says there are carrots, tomatoes, celery, pasta, spinach, onions, green beans, potatoes, vegetable concentrate, cauliflower, peas, and bell peppers included in this recipe. I did not taste or see any potatoes, cauliflower, peas or bell peppers here, and there were very little green beans. My can mostly had the variety of beans, tomatoes, onions, celery and pasta.
I typically think of minestrone soup as being a vegetable soup, but I have to say that I was disappointed in the amount of vegetables and the over abundance of legumes. This soup gave me terrible gas pains! I would not purchase this soup again, even at the bargain price of only $1.49.
