Fresh Selects Deli is a Hidden Korean Food Paradise
Do you work in the West of downtown Calgary and have a hankering for delicious Korean food at a reasonable price? Look no further than Fresh Selects Deli on 7th Street SW, between 8th and 9th Avenue. You won't be disappointed.
The secret to Fresh Selects Delis success is their Korean Food.
The REAL secret to Fresh Selects deli is their family oriented warm, friendly service.
The amazing TRUTH is not only do you get delicious food with a smile, it is reasonably priced.
Whats wrong with this picture - absolutely nothing - except that it is not well advertised, so consider me your official Fresh Selects ambassador.
I am ashamed to admit that I have walked by this little hole in the wall too many times to count and did not even know it was there. It is literally a doorway tucked into the side of Ceilis. It is located on 7th street, in between 8th and 9th Avenue and there is absolutely no curb appeal when you walk by this place. You literally walk past it quite easily.
However, I recommend you keep your eyes open, because there is a hidden jewel behind that door.
I did not even know that this place existed until one of my colleagues asked me to go for lunch and asked if I liked Korean food. Since I have never tried it, I had little opinion, but lots of willingness to give it a try. He mentioned that he has been going there for many years and he was officially introducing me.
He navigated me through the very small Korean menu and I sat down with my container full of a dish called Spicy Chicken, and a side of salad, of which I had four choices - a pasta salad, a cole slaw, a bean sprout salad, or kimchi. I chose the cole slaw, since I am a cabbage eating ukranian gal, and it looked to me like the cole slaw dressing was unique. Also, the dish came with a side of rice, of which you had a choice of toppings. I chose teriyaki sauce. The chicken, salad and rice came to less than $7.00. This is not a typo. Under $7.00.
The meal was absolutely delicious. The chicken was not very spicy by my standards (but bear in mind that vindaloo doesn't even make me wince). However, it was full of flavour and the flavour was amazing. The rice with teriyaki was as good as expected and the cole slaw was downright delicious as well.
Since that first visit, I have been back a few times a week. You cannot beat the price point downtown and everything is fresh, healthy and delicious. I have experimented with the bean sprout salad and I have decided it is my new favourite. It has a tiny bit of spice as well, and it also has a very mild vinegar taste, so it is a little better for my waistline.
If you work on the west side of downtown Calgary, do not miss this little door on 7 Street SW. For its price point, it is absolutely amazing.
