I've been to the location on Poplar Avenue in Memphis many times, each time enjoying their famous pulled pork BBQ, either on a sandwich or on a plate. What was my experience like?
The great thing about this place is that they have two dining choices for you - eat inside, in one of their cozy booths perhaps, or you can choose to get your food to go through their drive-through window! You could definitely say they're some major competition for next door's McDonald's. After all - what would you rather have when you're on the run and need a drive-through: a big, juicy BBQ sandwich or a limp, tasteless burger? You get the point. Here is what I appreciate and love so much about Corky's BBQ:
Tender, succulent meat
I don't like it when meat is dried out, or when it's cut too close to the bone and you end up picking pieces of bone or hard matter out of your mouth. Corky's doesn't have this problem. In fact, I can't remember a time that I've even had to scout out a toothpick after dining! Their meat is really juicy, tender, and flavorful.
The sauce
I admit, Corky's doesn't have my all-time favorite sauce, because it tends to be a little bit sweet for my taste... but it is really good. I usually end up putting extra sauce over my meat, which they gladly give you (in the drive-thru they give you extra packets, much larger than typical ketchup packets). The sauce is sweet, and the consistency is like your typical bottled grocery store sauce.
The amount of food for the money
One thing that really irritates me when I go to a restaurant, whether I plan on splurging or not, is when they give you a bunch of "fillers" like bread or beans, and hardly any of what you really want. Well what you really want at Corky's is obviously the BBQ, and let me tell you - you get a very decent amount for the price. The first time I went with my husband, I ordered a basic pulled pork plate with the sides (slaw, beans, bread) and I couldn't even finish all my food! And what was great was that the meat filled up more than half my plate so that I actually had to take the little bowl of slaw off of it and set it on the table! And then, if you order one of their sandwiches, you can hardly finish it because it's so big and only $3.99 for the regular one, and $4.99 for the large one! My husband ordered ribs, and couldn't finish his - and that man of mine can eat a lot!
Even the sides are great
Another thing that can easily irritate me is when the sides are nothing spectacular. Well Corky's has some tasty sides, especially their coleslaw. It tastes very, very fresh... as if they just prepared it for you because it has things in it like fresh chopped green bell peppers which gives it a nice zip. The baked beans are really good, too, because they add a little bit of meat and seems like BBQ sauce to them.
