Camping 101 - Tips for Being a Happy Camper

Little things like pitching your tent in the right place and keeping your belongings dry can make or break a happy camper. Use these tips the next time you go camping and you just may want to extend your stay.

Happy campers are not born, they are made by the little things that make life more comfortable. That includes the little things that make roughing it out in the woods more enjoyable and less of a hardship. Little things like pitching your tent in the right place and keeping your belongings dry can make or break a happy camper. Use these tips the next time you go camping and you just may want to extend your stay.

Tent Placement

This is the most important thing to remember when pitching a tent - stay away from trees. You do not want to be under a tree in case dead limbs fall off of it and onto the tent or in case of a storm that could topple the entire tree onto your tent.

Having tree roots under your tent is something to avoided as well - if lightening strikes the tree, the roots could become conductors of the electricity and lead the lightening bolt right into your tent.

Keep Tent Clean

Your tent is your castle in the woods, but since you are in the woods, dirt, filth, odor, wetness and animals often find their way in if you are not fastidious with keeping your tent clean. Take shoes and wet, smelly clothing off outside the tent and store them away from the tent. Absolutely no food inside the tent. Not because of the crumbs or dirty dishes, but because the scent could lure in small and large animals looking for a meal. Keep all food boxed or bagged and away from the tent.

Easy Start Fire

Don't try to be a Boy Scout and start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, do it the easy way with a firestarter stick. A firestarter stick is weatherproof and burns long enough to get the wood kindling ignited for a camp fire. Gather your kindling and wood before dark and create a safe fire pit away from your tent.

Scent Away

Anything that has a scent, including personal hygiene products like toothpaste, soap and lotion, should be stored in your vehicle. Never bring anything with a scent inside your tent, even if the scent is not food, curious woodland animals will come to investigate what is in their territory.
