Best BBQ Joints Within 50 Miles of Raleigh
If you've never had North Carolina BBQ, you've never really had BBQ. Some of the best BBQ joints are within 50 miles of Raleigh.
North Carolina is known for that tangy BBQ sauce with just a touch of mustard and a lot of zing, but what most non-southerners don't realize is the wood smoked taste underneath that tangy sauce is what really sets North Carolina BBQ apart from others. Raleigh is the epicenter of the state - take a short drive in any direction and you'll arrive at some excellent BBQ joints.
Smokey's BBQ Shack - Morrisville, NC
Located less than 15 miles from Raleigh on Chapel Hill Road in Morrisville is Smokey's BBQ Shack; the home of Smokey's secret sauces and some rocking tables. The atmosphere is laid back and busy, especially during lunch when crowds flock in for pulled pork sandwiches and slaw, by far my favorite basket on the menu. While the menu is packed with traditional BBQ fare like baked beans and potato salad, it's the fried okra, mixed greens and Brunswick stew that transform your meal into a magical southern feast.
Backyard BBQ Pit - Durham, NC
Take a 25-mile ride down the 40 W to Durham and you'll find a family owned and operated BBQ joint that is unmatched anywhere in the triangle. The Backyard BBQ Pit is a smokehouse serving pork, beef and chicken daily, but patrons don't have to settle for classic BBQ dishes at this joint. Some of the best dishes are based on southern home cooking like the fried pork chops smothered in gravy with a side of fried cabbage and candied yams. Just remember, the spicy BBQ sauce has a kick so order a gallon of southern sweet tea.
The Q Shack - Raleigh, NC
The Q Shack on North Hills Street is not your hole-in-the-wall BBQ shack that only the locals know about. This place is one of the fancier BBQ joints, but they still offer authentic North Carolina BBQ along with Texan and Midwestern BBQ - a one-stop shop for all your BBQ needs. The real pull of The Q Shack is the restaurant's dedication to local produce and meats. Meats are all-natural, with the pork, chicken and turkey sourced from local farms. No hormones are used in any of the meat served at The Q Shack and they even use peanut-free vegetable oils. Produce is ordered from local farms and the kitchen pays special attention to organic produce whenever possible.
There are quite a few reasons why North Carolinians love their state and the BBQ is one. Whether it's the tangy, mustard sauce or hickory-smoked goodness, we'll never know. Enjoy!
