How to Use a Plastic Bag to Apply Wet and Dry Rubs and Marinades to Food Items

Plastic bags are great for applying wet and dry rubs and marinades to various food items. Here is an article which explains how to use this method.

Quite often when I'm cooking at home I find that there are food items I would like to coat with either a wet or dry rub or a marinade. Because I am always looking for ways to minimize cleanup when preparing and cooking foods, I usually apply both wet and dry rubs and marinades to various foods using a plastic bag.

When I say plastic bag I am not referring to some special type of kitchen bag. Rather, I mean any type of plastic bag. More often than not the type of bag that I use is a plastic bag that contained merchandise that I purchased at CVS Pharmacy. While I usually utilize CVS bags for garbage, they are also ideal for applying rubs and marinades.

Let's say for example that you would like to apply a dry rub of garlic powder, curry powder, chili powder, salt and pepper to a piece of meat, fish or poultry. If you were to apply all of the spices to the meat, fish or poultry in a pan or bowl or on a cutting board, chances are good that at least some of the spices would create a little mess and you would still have to wash whatever utensil you used.

When you apply a wet or dry rub to food items using a plastic bag the first thing to do is make sure there are no holes in the bag. Then place the foods that the rub or marinade is to be applied to in the bag.

If it is a dry rub that is being applied I normally pour the desired amount of herbs, spices and seasonings into the bottom of the bag then gather the bag together and tie a knot in it. Then I hold the bag with both hands and shake fairly vigorously. With the fingertips you can feel if there are clumps of spices and seasonings clinging to the bag and you can rub them right into the item receiving the rub.

As you shake the bag it is best to sort of turn it over a couple of times while you gently press the spices and seasonings into the item. The way that food items get coated with ingredients using this method is usually very good.

With wet marinades it is imperative that there be no holes in the bag. After placing the food to be marinated in the bag, add whatever liquids you are using then seal the bag by tying a knot or using a closure. After shaking the bag a few times to get all sides of the item coated I usually place the bag on a piece of newspaper in the refrigerator in case anything leaks. By using the newspaper there is nothing to wash. After you've removed the marinating food simpy wrap the plastic bag in the newspaper then throw it out.

Although using a plastic bag to apply wet and dry rubs and marinades is a simple technique, it really is a quick, convenient and effective method.
