As if school year book reports aren't enough to elicit the I-hate-to-read tirades, summer reading assignments can have even bookworms groaning. Starchy pages and a structured list don't mesh well with the freedom kids associate with those precious three months. While the sight of academic paraphernalia in Popsicle-stained hands might prompt a double take, I assure you, summer reading can become a less shocking occurrence in your household.
Summer Reading Strategy #1: Establishing the Time Frame
Kids and teens aren't known for their precise perception of time. My daughter still swears her broken leg took "a couple of weeks" to heal, while I remember every day of the eight-week recovery. Help them to conceptualize. Instead of letting my children procrastinate summer reading with "But, I have three whole months," I lay out the calendar. First, I remind my son, on weekends, we usually do outdoor things as a family. He's down 22 days. Factor in some sports camps. Minus 10 days. Account for time spent with friends, the grandparents' visit, the family camping trip--any occasion that he is likely to have more exciting options at hand. Can a kid hang with friends, shoot hoops, and chip away at summer reading all in the same day? Absolutely. If he's already struggling to pick up the book, will he be likely to? Probably not. Be generous when calculating your children's time commitments; underestimate the time they'll actually devote to summer reading.
Summer Reading Strategy #2: Breaking it Up
Two hundred page book to read? Big numbers are frustrating for young minds to encounter. They can be so daunting that kids put off starting summer reading out of fear of never finishing. Counterproductive much? Just like you'd do for choking-hazard hot dogs and grapes, cut summer reading up. Divide the scary page total by the number of free days you've calculated for your child. Six pages a day was more encouraging for my daughter to hear. In no time, she scoffed at and surpassed her daily summer reading goal, because half a dozen pages weren't enough "to get into the book. It's just stupid." Who said a little 'tude couldn't help with schoolwork?
Summer Reading Strategy #3: Getting (Even a Little) Involved
My husband, who has a voracious appetite for adventure stories, purchased the e-reader version of a book my son was assigned. While my son first balked at the idea of Dad tagging along in his summer reading, they had many a conversation about viper snakes and Mongolia. I'm not saying you should take on your children's summer reading assignments. (Not great beach material.) However, it never hurts to familiarize yourself with your children's summer reading lists. Look up online summaries or reviews of the books they're working on. So when your child inevitably hits a boring chapter and you're subject to nonstop complaints, you can at least empathize. And maybe laugh about it later when the last page is turned.
