I fully agree with Terry Edwards' article 5 Reasons Why a Gas Grill is Best. I believe that gas grills are better than charcoal grills in many ways.
Convenience - This is the number one reason why I love my gas grill. I don't have to bother with messy charcoal or smelly lighter fluid anymore. Also, the last time I had to buy charcoal for a friends grill, it was very expensive. Not to mention the lighter fluid. I tried to be cheap and so I skipped buying the lighter fluid and we ended up trying for over 30 minutes to get the grill fired up. If we would've used a gas grill, we would've been eating by that time! A gas grill is also convenient when traveling. I have a small, portable gas grill and it's great to take on picnics, to the beach, tailgating, or any other place that you want to cook but there's nothing to cook with. One thing you do have to keep in mind though is that you need to make sure that you use your gas grill in a well ventilated area. The fumes that are emitted from a gas grill can be dangerous if you inhale them.
You can grill out at anytime - Living in Florida, this is very important to me. We often have severe weather and a downpour could occur at any given time. I would hate to have my New York Strips on a charcoal grill and have to take them off when they are only half done just because it starts to rain. That would be a huge waste of money. However, with the gas grill, you can continue cooking your food even in the wind and rain. A gas grill is a "must have" for hurricane season. When our power goes out, we just light up the grill and we have a hot meal. Most gas grills have burners on the side, so you can use that just as you would your stove.
Built in thermostat - I'll admit it, I'm horrible when it comes to grilling. However, the gas grill has made me a better chef. I could never master the art of lighting the charcoal and putting the food on at the right time. I would either put them on too soon and the food would taste like lighter fluid, or I would put the food on too late and the coals would burn out before the food was done cooking. With a gas grill, I just turn it on, set the thermostat, and I know that my food will be cooked evenly and at the exact temperature I want it. The built in thermostat takes the guesswork out of grilling, which is very important to me since I had a bout of food poisoning from uncooked chicken not too long ago.
You have the ability to cook different foods at the same time - When you're outside grilling, the last thing you want to be doing is running back and forth inside the house to check on the other food you're cooking in the kitchen. With most gas grills, you have two different sides of the grill with two different thermostats. This is great when you have people who like their meat cooked differently and you want to have all the food ready at the same time. And going back to the side burners that I talked about earlier, you can boil corn, potatoes or anything else you want to cook on those burners. Having a gas grill is like having a portable kitchen on wheels.
Clean up - Cleaning up a gas grill is so easy compared to cleaning out a charcoal grill. Besides cleaning the grates and changing the lava rocks every now and then, there's not much else that needs to be cleaned up. You don't have to worry about disposing of the charcoal and waiting for everything to cool down.
Gas grills are great in every way, and in my opinion are the best grills out there. Not only does the food tastes great, but gas grills are convenient and very easy to clean. I don't know who would chose to purchase a charcoal grill when gas grills are obviously the better choice.
