Bourbon Q Classic: Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce Review
Bourbon Q Classic Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce is an award winning barbecue sauce that we bought when we visited family in Louisiana. Very strong flavor, with an "Old School" flavor.
Bourbon Q Classic Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce comes in a glass bottle, one that is flat and reminds me of a whiskey flask. It contains 12.7 ounces, and was purchased at a store called the "Old Farmers Almanac." It retailed for $9.95, which I thought was outrageously expensive, but it sounded so delicious I took a gamble and purchased it anyway.
This barbecue sauce has a very rich, dark color, making it look more like a bottle of steak sauce than barbecue sauce. The back label says this is the companies classic sauce, and that it has been available to the public since 1990. It goes on to say that this sauce won a world championship rib competition, "as well as a host of local and regional barbecue titles and awards".
It is described as being a hearty flavored sauce, its ingredients include tomato sauce, sugar, vinegar, molasses, hot sauce, fresh onion, fresh garlic with oil, corn starch, Worcestershire sauce, natural hickory flavorings, spices, thickener, aged Kentucky bourbon, lemon juice, citric acid, and cayenne pepper.
My husband and I used this Bourbon Q Classic Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce yesterday to make barbecued turkey legs on our grill. The sauce is not too thick (medium consistency), and pours easily through the wide neck bottle. There is a picture of a glass of bourbon in the center of a "Q" on the label, but I really didn't think this had a bold bourbon flavor.
We were able to bake this into the meat, and it didn't burn on the grill, but then turkey legs don't contain a lot of fat that would cause a grill fire either. The sauce looks absolutely delicious, but to me it had more of a pungent scent than a sweet scent, and I prefer a sweeter barbecue sauce. I make a killer barbecue sauce using bacon grease and some of the same ingredients in the Bourbon Q Classic Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce, and our family feels that my recipe is superior to this award winning sauce that I paid almost $10 for.
If you like a strong flavored barbecue, you might like this one, but we were actually pretty disappointed, since our expectations were so high. I personally would not purchase this again if I had the opportunity. It's just not the kind of barbecue sauce that I prefer, but obviously with the awards that were won, a lot of people loved it. It may be worth a try!
